This column carries information related to what it takes to build a comfortable and safe home. It also includes general tips on creating a positive environment everywhere you go. It emphasizes the aspects which help us grow and makes us conscious of those which smother our progress and deflect our energy. Our direct surroundings reflect who we are and who we are is a reflection of all that surrounds us. Being and staying mindful is what helps us move along with ease.
V rubriki 'Okolje in Čuječnost' domujejo članki o tem, kako ustvariti prijeten bivalni prostor in okolje na sploh. Kaj so tiste stvari, ki nas dvigujejo in kaj tiste, ki nas dušijo. Vse, kar nas obdaja je odraz naše notranjosti, in naša notranjost je odraz vsega, kar nas obdaja. Čuječnost nam pomaga ohranjati lahkotnost življenja.
How many dimensions does our home have? And which is the most important? Are some really more important than others? Our home lives with us, breathes, rejoices and cries with us. It is made up of things we can see, feel, hear and smell. These are all things that we take in, and that affect how we will feel in a particular space. For me, the most important thing is definitely the pleasant smell / quality air. Yes, I like a place to be tidy and aesthetically pleasing, but the smell of the air is what really determines my vibe. I remember my first Yankee candle. When I was little my mother bought it in Vienna, where we shortly lived; the smell was wonderful. I don’t remember the name, I probably never knew it because I probably couldn't even read back then. It smelled of freshly washed and sun-dried sheets, and I felt so safe around it. My love for Yankee candles has grown with me - I think that's obvious. Our sense of smell is a funny thing. Is it just me, or doe certain scents bring back a whole lot of memories and emotions? But please - IMPORTANT: please pay attention to how your pets react to certain candles as they can irritate them or even cause an allergic reaction. Our furry friends have never had issues with Yankee candles, but you can never be too careful!
My top 3 scents that I ALWAYS have at home are Soft Blanket, Warm Cashmere and from this spring on, Camelia Blossom. Otherwise, I often turn on Sweet Honeycomb and Water Garden, too.
Anyway, I hope you guys have a lovely weekend! And thanks for stopping by (:
Which are your core values? Do you live by them? What builds up your self-worth? Are those sources renewable? Are you satisfied with your life or do you crawl into bed late each night feeling exhausted? Get in touch with yourself.
ACKNOWLEDGE THE “AUTOPILOT”
How many times a day does it happen that you open your laptop in order to respond to an email and end up closing it an hour later, or you follow a YouTube link your friend sent to you and end up watching ten other suggested videos before calling it a day? Mindfulness does not tell you not to respond or not to watch, but works as a little reminder to only do the things that you truly set out to do. Your “autopilot” consists of activities which you usually do without paying too much attention to them. A great way to start being more mindful is to choose a part of you daily routine (brushing your teeth, walking, cleaning, breathing, drinking coffee, etc.) and give it your maximum attention for about a week. That does not mean you have to start enjoying it, but means you try to live it to its core. This allows that even the most everyday tasks become meditative.
BE MINDFUL OF YOUR BODY
It is easy to forget about yourself when you are trying to keep up with the pace of the modern world. “Anchoring” is an approach that might help you get back on track and help you form a stronger connection between your body, mind and spirit. You can start by lying face up on the floor (or any other flat surface) and closing your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and then slow down the pace of your breathing. Focus on the contact you have with the surface underneath. Become mindful of all of your body parts – starting with your arms: your shoulders, humerus, elbows, ulna, wrists, and palms, and doing the same with your legs and other parts of your body (yes, your scalp too). Mind each of them separately, skipping none. Take as much time as you need and finish the exercise with more deep inhales and exhales. Slowly open your eyes.
ADD VALUE AND PURPOSE TO YOUR LIFE
We often wonder about the meaning of our lives and life in general. When all seems in vain and it feels like it's all just a bunch of crap, it is important that we compose ourselves. You do that by making short meditations a ritual. Doing a three minute meditation (sitting/lying on the floor with all thoughts focused on your inner world/self (and mindful of the air entering and leaving your body) in the morning and in the evening can work wonders. Do not be discouraged if it is hard to keep your mind from wondering places. You will get the grip of things over time. Practice makes perfect, always.
LET RUMINANTS DO THE RUMINATING
Overthinking is one of the most common causes of anxiety, fear and catastrophizing. Losing time over the “what ifs” takes away the magic of the present moment and makes us oblivious to the gifts of the now. What happened in the past is in the past and we must use it as a learning experience to grow from. There is no predicting the future, either (That is still the case, right?). Overthinking can come as a response to our inner commands and restrictions. For example, a girl feeling that she must always be kind and never be angry would most likely spend most of her days wondering if she was nice enough to the people around her. She would analyse carefully what it would be like expressing anger and what consequences there would be to her actions. You can stop overthinking by setting firm boundaries between actions that are in our power and actions that are out of our hands. We can only control what we say, how we behave and how we feel. We cannot control what others think, how they speak and how they act. The sooner we internalize this, the easier it will be to let go of overthinking.
If we try to run from our problems and fears, they will continue chasing us. True healing happens only when we let them catch us and have no other way out but to face them headfirst. Experiencing stress and feeling anxious is completely normal and human. Believing we could ever simply delete those feelings is counterproductive and can cause more damage than anything else. What we can do is accept them as parts of who we are and learn to live with them, stopping them from overtaking our being.
Another great way of being mindful is going on a trip, preferably with friends. Leave your phone at home and completely sign off from everything. Go to a nearby hill or visit the seaside. Get lost in feeling the little stones under your feet as you walk around and enjoy the fresh air. Feel as they become stuck in the sole of your flat trainers (At least that is how my hikes go – appropriate foot attire? Never heard of it). Pay attention to the warm air stroking your cheeks and hear the laughter of your company. Being mindful does not have to be hard at all. We just have to accept it with our arms wide open.
Kaj so naše temeljne vrednote? Jih živimo? In iz katerih virov črpamo lastno vrednost? So obnovljivi?
Stopimo v stik sami s seboj.
In nč bat, če misli uhajajo. Vaja dela mojstra, mojster dela vajo. Vedno.
Dokler bežimo pred težavami in strahovi, nas bodo lovili.
The environment in which we live strongly influences our general well-being. This is exactly why it's a good move to fill our home or office with positive energy and give way to good vibes. I am not aiming at mastering Feng shui, but merely at following your intuition and creating a space reflective of you and your needs. By listening to yourself, you will open the door to creativity and allow your body to constantly recharge with the free flowing energy of your surroundings.
Base your furniture and decoration choices on the room type (bedroom, office, living room,) and make sure you think about the chosen room’s main purpose, the amount of time you plan to spend there and the way you wish to feel while living in it.
What kind of furniture to choose and how to position it in order for it to be functional and look good at the same time?
Furniture is the most essential part to any room. I suggest you color-coordinate all your furniture items, only using a few, perhaps vintage, pieces to break the flow and make it more dynamic. Of course, all these choices must be conditioned by the color of your floor, walls and windows. Allow some room for contrasts, for example, having dark floor and light furniture. Don't hesitate to spice things up with a nice rug, a cute coffee table and some scattered brass trays. You can also set the mood with good, thought through lighting. I love floor lamps, “out of the box” chandeliers, technical lights, or simply attaching a bulb to the end of the cord. Seal the deal with scented candles-a lot of them.
Which interior design elements should you focus on and which details will set the desired mood?
“The devil is in the detail.” We all know this is true. Details and little gestures are what can lift a room from a 4.5 to a 10 with ease. Even though minimalism can do the job just fine, do not avoid using color, texture and exciting shapes to fill up the space. Hang paintings, add books of all colors and sizes, get different chairs and set them around one table, etc. It does not have to match perfectly to look and feel good. These items are there to reflect your inner world, carry memories dear to your heart and bring a smile to your face each time you glance at them. All kinds of items can end up used as decoration. Do you happen to have your grandpa’s old analogue camera lying around, collecting dust in the attic? Perhaps you should give your aunt’s old chairs a second chance. There might be an adorable mirror waiting for you at the flea market in the city centre. Don't be afraid to be creative and search for ideas outside of the box.
House plants: Yes or No?
House plants simultaneously represent my favorite element of interior design and the element which causes me the most distress. Our cats, Kenzo and Rina, munch on EVERYTHING, which pretty much takes away any chances of us actually owning any indoor plants. The ones I would love to own (mostly tropical plants) are unfortunately fatally toxic to them, so I have no choice but to search for “pet friendly” options and make some compromises (I will post more on those in one of my next blog posts). I see plants as independent interior design elements that help ground the space and keep us connected to nature. They provide peace and comfort.
Me and my husband carefully followed these guidelines while renovating our apartment and are beyond satisfied with the outcome. We got most of our design items at Kubus, and there are, of course, some minor things we still have to take care of (installing lights in the bathroom and fixing the mirror, having a proper rug in the living room (How exactly do you explain to your 11-month-old puppy that eating the rug is not equivalent to eating grass?), installing air-conditioning (waiting since February), sealing off holes in our living room, hanging paintings, etc.) but after all of this, though, we will have made it! I am beyond happy that we took our time and actually thought about the space we wish to have. It would have been the easiest to just buy random furniture and set it wherever in the house. I am really proud of our final product and I truly feel at home!
Krasne so stoječe luči, kakšni 'out of the box' lustri, tehnične luči ali pa kar žarnica na koncu kabla.
'The devil is in the detail'. Okrasni elementi naj odražajo naš notranji svet, nosijo spomine na potovanja in srečanja, in nam prinašajo zadovoljstvo in nasmeh vsakič, ko jih vidimo.
HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE - HOME DECOR EDITION
I know I promised I'd post more on my blog but there was just so much stuff going on in the past month! Žiga is in Kuwait a lot, and I have so much work here (thank god!), but now I finally found the time to put together this Holiday Gift Guide: HOME DECOR!
And I made it easy for you, I picked out everything at one shop in Ljubljana - KUBUS interier, so you don't have to run around to get everything! You can visit the store at Rimska cesta 23.
I decided to make a HOME DECOR themed gift guide, maybe in a couple of days I'll make another one with a different theme. But for now these are my top picks. I own all of these, and honestly I'd love to get them as a present myself. The salt and pepper shakers are ceramic with a wooden stand, and I couldn't imagine having any other shakers! The Emma pitcher keeps me hydrated while working, and the to-go cup keeps my coffee hot throughout the day. The bread basket is an absolute must for any household, and the Shorebird sculpture adds so much character to your home. These are only my top picks, you can get so much more cool stuff at Kubus interier! And don't forget to check out the product of the month (discountsssssss).
It's so good to be back! The past couple of months have been all about renovating. But not only our home, I also refreshed the look of my blog a little bit! Honestly I missed writing blog posts, but I just hadn't had the time to prioritize that. I really wanted to grow my YouTube channel, so I put my blog on hold for a while. BUT. Now my YT channel is up and running, and I have a routine of creating videos, so I can slowly start writing more blog posts again! You can expect new posts once a week, on Thursdays at 20:00.
Today is special to me - this is the first blog post about our renovation, and I'm finally sharing some BEFORE / AFTER pictures!! I was dying to post them, because I just feel we did a really good job renovating and designing our new home (if you want to see more detailed updates you can find them on YouTube at the RENOVATION playlist). We did some of the renovation work ourselves, as much as was possible, but now that we've been assembling the kitchen and other furniture we mostly did it ourselves (HUGE THANKS to our friends for helping out).
We got the kitchen at Ikea, but what I really want to talk about today are the Hay AAS 38 stools we got at Kubus, and also show you some other kitchen items we found there.
The AAS 38 is a real gem. We were looking for the perfect stool for our kitchen island for ages, and finally we found it at Kubus, where we sat down with an architect and talked things through. We are super impressed by the service and level of expertise Kubus offers, and adding the finishing touches to our kitchen was so much easier with their help!
As you may have noticed, in some of the photos you can see our dining table and chairs. We got the table custom made, but the chairs are our 'old' chairs we got for our previous apartment, and are also from Kubus. The Vitra Eames Fiberglass Side chairs are super playful, and the fact that we have 5 different color ways just makes the whole kitchen / dining area a little less 'clean' and dull.
Talking about the KITCHEN / DINING AREA - as you can tell from the before / after photos, we've torn down the wall separating the kitchen from the living room, and now we have one big space (39m2), and that was probably one of, if not THE best call we made throught the renovation. Opening up the living and cooking area brought so much light and warmth to our home, now all we have to do is figure out where to put the Christmas tree!
But let's get back to the kitchen. The kitchen is 460cm long, and the island is 240cmx90cm, and we're already starting to realize that's where the main mess will be going down. The vibe in the kitchen just makes you not want to leave! Especially now that we have these super cool (and comfy AF) stools, and all the super nice 'accessories' we got at Kubus. The bread basket, tray, salt & pepper shakers, and the pitcher are from Stelton, and the Eames bird that has been on our whish list for ages (that was our 'moving in' present to ourselves).
So to sum things up: even an Ikea kitchen can look like a million dollars if you know how to magic it up with some final touches, so you don't have to spend a fortune to have a really good looking kitchen! There are some things worth investing in, and one of these things are definitely CHAIRS. You need to take care of your body, so how and where you sit is super important! And cheap, badly designed chairs can seriously harm your spine, and consequentially your hips, shoulders, and neck. So people. If you're sitting down a lot (which you probably are, lol this lifestyle is killing us), do yourself a favour and sit on a quality chair. At Kubus you can find all kinds of chairs (office, lounge, dining, stools,..) so make sure to pay them a visit at Rimska cesta 23 in Ljubljana, and talk things through.
AND if you're looking for new stools I need to let you know that the ASS 38 is CURRENTLY ON SALE at Kubus, as it is the product of the month! You can get the 20% off so it's a pretty darn good deal!
Anyway guys. Creating this blog post felt so good, and I'm looking forward to next Thursday already! If you have any questions about our kitchen or Kubus just leave them in the comments or drop me a DM on Instagram.
